Born as servants, humankind was crafted to tend to the opulent carven sanctums of the Giants. While humans toiled in blood and sweat, the old masters communed with the angels of the Outer Darkness.
<div id="illusion1">In their arrogance, the Giants attempted to claim the divine island of Zinilem. Born from the flesh of one of the Pit's deceased dark gods, the island was home to twisted beasts of great power: <b>Demons</b>.</div>

It was the human known as Ila-Dyn who sought out the most tranquil of demons and made an offer that would ultimately save the people of Ebyl. They beseeched the tranquil demons to protect their people and in exchange, promised to honor the protectors with offerings of food and pleasure.
On the day of that promise, Ebyl gained its fearsome guardians and the Cult of the Warding Beasts was born.

<div class="article_title">The Sanctum of Ebyl</div>
Ebyl is one of the many domed sanctums built by the Giants in their attempted conquest of the island. Sculpting automatons within the sanctum's bowels churned out human servants to tend to the sanctum while their masters planned for war. When the invasion failed and the Giants were forced to retreat, they abandoned many of the sanctums, Ebyl being among them. Unlike its neighbors, Nebed or Admador, Ebyl's caretaker automatons did not survive the battle and thus the human populace of Ebyl was left without guidance.
Ebyl sits alone atop of the Narrow Plateau, surrounded on all sides by deep gorges where the native demons dwell. Other than climbing or flying, a bridge-like stairway is the only way to access the plateau.
The Giants used their clay sorcery to mold the entire sanctum from the very earth, and thus very little of it was actually made by human hands. As Ebyl was meant to serve as a temporary colony, it does not possess the transdimensional liminal architecture of the greater sanctums. The buildings are rectangular in shape with flattened roofs, rounded corners, and staircases carved into their sides. The people of Ebyl often paint and draw upon the walls these buildings, which are thick and often covered in vines. These buildings are clustered together, creating narrow streets and often seem stacked upon one another.
The buildings near the center of the sanctum used to serve as the living quarters of the Giants themselves. As a result, they are large, spacious, and far more ornate than the other buildings.
The dome that once covered all of Ebyl was heavily damaged, leaving most of the sanctum's buildings exposed. It was perhaps only Ebyl's placement atop the Narrow Plateau that prevented the sanctum's immediate destruction. Sections of the sanctum have oddly placed walls and barricades, or possess cage-like structures. Such installations were hasty attempts by the Giants to fortify the sanctum against demon raids.

<div class="article_title">Demons</div>
A mysterious collection of beings found all across the known world. They are strange and bestial creatures possessing inhuman abilities and nonsensical anatomy.
According to the stories told by the old masters, demons are descended from the Dark Gods of the Pit by the Lord of the Hidden Sun. The Lord cut the Dark Gods into pieces and from their remains, the demons were born. To this day, they wage war against the blessed servants of the Hidden Sun.
In the modern faith of the Ebyl, demons are believed to be living symbols of the eternal conflict between joy and torment. The contradictions of their nature are the source of their magical power.
It is impossible to get a conclusive answer from the demons themselves, as their blood memory can only go so far.

<div class="article_title">Womb Trees</div>
Fleshy black and red trees that grow from the corpses of demons. Rather than bark, they are covered in lustrous black flesh with crimson veins. They resemble a double helix in shape and possess red cores filled with blood.
A womb tree grows newborn demons within its cores. When matured enough, the infant demons burst from the tree like gorey fruit.

<div class="article_title">Prayerroot Forest</div>
The northern forest that sits between the Narrows and the Slithering Valley. The enormous trees here are tall enough to dwarf buildings while their thick canopies block out light. The forest gets its name from the almost inaudible hum that emanates from the trees as their branches reach toward the sky, praying for rain.

<div class="article_title">Scarlet Woods</div>
One of the two forests encircling the Narrows, the Scarlet Woods dominate the southern side of the island. Named for the leaves of its trees, which always are either a deep red or a golden-orange. Legend has it that great archdemon died here, the forest having sprung from its blood. Indeed, the faint scent of blood seems to cling to the winds passing through the forest and a series of dark red rivers is spread across the region.

<div class="article_title">The Gentle Hands</div>
The Gentle Hands are the most numerous members of the cult and are the ones that carry out most of the rituals. They are a combination of servant and holy concubine, tending to the needs of the cult's protector demons. When a demon climbs up the plateau from the forests below, the Gentle Hands welcome them with sweet-smelling flower petals and offerings of food. Should the demon stay after finishing its meal, the Gentle Hands keep them company. Whether it is a massage, a bath, or sex, it is the purpose of the Gentle Hands to see that the demon is satisfied.
Gentle Hands often train early on with one another. While most demons are indiscriminate, other demons may fixate on a particular Gentle Hand. Such Gentle Hands are known as the Favored, and it is seen as a great honor.
Due to the nature of their jobs, Gentle Hands usually wear revealing apparel made from fine translucent fabrics. Also common are bodysuits or wrappings made from a glossy gelatinous sap harvested from demon womb trees.
<<case "rough hands">>
<div class="article_title">The Rough Hands</div>
The Rough Hands are the protectors of the cult. Unlike the other two sects, they do not normally participate in ritualistic tribute to the demons. Instead they arm themselves with rudimentary weapons and fight alongside the Warden Beasts in battle against predators that invade the Narrow. As they are still human, they usually keep to fighting lesser demons while supporting allied demons in battle. Their numbers are few due to Kath's population being sterile and the potentials for death associated with the profession. Thus they are rarely used unless the sanctum itself is in immediate danger.
In times of peace, they act as guardians for the other two sects, escorting them on long journeys or during certain rituals. If during a ritual of "flesh communion", one of the Gentle Hands needs a break, the hard bodied Rough Hand will step in and take their place. As only the most physically capable of humans are allowed to the join the Rough Hands, they can take more rougher attention from the cult's demons.
They usually wear armor made from crystallized demon bone with wrappings of black gelatin.

<div class="article_title">The Guiding Hands</div>
The Guiding Hands are those who tend to the spiritual beliefs of the cult. While originally the cult's relationship to demons was purely utilitarian, over time its members have come to believe that the Warding Beasts are embodiment of divine pleasure. The eternal conflict between Pain and Pleasure is a central tenet of the cult's beliefs. The Guiding Hands come up with the various rituals performed by the cult, which are designed to bring blessings of pleasure to the sanctuary. They prepare the various drinks and foods offered as tribute to the demons, ensuring a satisfying taste. They are also responsible for teaching the basic rituals to initiates to the cult. Finally, they tend to the giant silkworms within the sanctuary that are used to produce fabric.
They usually wear long flowing robes of silk and wrappings around their eyes so as to attune their other senses

The Dream and the Nightmare are locked within an eons long battle over dominion of the Sleeper’s mind. The world was born in the wake of this battle. In some versions of the tale, the Dream used its own skin to imprison the Nightmare, creating the world.
The cult believes that all of life is a battle between joy and torment. Every thing contains both the essence of suffering and joy within itself, though in differing amounts. Through the rituals of the faith, the people of Ebyl ward minimize suffering and maximize bliss.

<div class="article_title">The Sable Garden</div>
The so-called Sable Garden is a section of the sanctum where fallen demons have been buried. From their remains, lustrous black womb trees have grown in small clusters, giving the garden its name. The area thus acts as nursery, where newborn demons emerge from the tree and are tended to by the Gentle Hands. This is a sacred task for the Gentle Hands, as demons raised within the sanctum have proven to be friendlier to humans than the demons born within the wilds. Newborn demons often resemble limbless larva and even the ones that have managed to grow legs are still vulnerable to cannibalism by adult demons. Thus incense is used in surrounding buildings to draw a hungry adult's attention away from the Sable Garden.

<b>Demons of Ebyl</b>
Demons typically visit Ebyl for a day or two every week though the social ones occasionally stay for longer periods of time. Like stray cats, they lounge about in the streets or perch themselves on top of buildings like living gargoyles. The creatures have free reign of the sanctum and wander in and out as they please. Tributes of food and drink are left out in the open for them to partake at their leisure and they are frequently entertained by members of the Warding Beast Hands.

A legendary place said to have existed during the dawn of all things. A vast forest, filled with flowers of every color imaginable. Thick vines snake around the stone pillars of the walled garden. Fragrant flowers of great beauty grow in beds within the shadows of ruined statues.
Within the walls of this great garden, the people of Ebyl who do not belong to the Warding Beast Hands work to grow food.
The old masters of Ebyl used this place to grow food for both themselves and their slaves. The dirt here carries a strange power, allowing plants humans can eat to grow here. Around this time of year, tasty gourds and potent herbs grow among the flower beds.
In a neighboring chamber bearing a stone dome, the silkworms of Ebyl are kept and tended to by the Gentle Hands.

<b>Telzebu</b> is a small demon with thick purple fur and a bushy tail bearing dark stripes. Their tiny hands possess dexterous, clawed fingers, good for precisely manipulating objects.
They, along with Kerata are well known for causing mischief around Ebyl.

<b>Kerata</b> is a lithe, reptilian demon with fine red scales and bright green eyes. Her mouth is full of serrated fangs yet the claws on her hands and feet are even sharper. She is small for a demon of her kind, roughly shorter than your average human. Her humanoid appearance is uncommon, yet not unheard of.
She and Telzebu are well known for causing mischief around Ebyl.
